Mutant Strains Of Polio Vaccine Now Cause More Paralysis Than Wild Polio
While this is a concern, the numbers involve tells a clear story. The Polio eradication campaign worldwide has been success to the extent that in 2017 as few as 5 infections and paralysis with wild Polio virus was reported while 21 cases of mutated Polio vaccine were reported to cause disease. This is against millions of children who could have been paralysed or died each but have been prevented by the vaccine.
This is an adverse event which should not be used fuel any stupid conspiracies. Polio is very very bad disease. The vaccine was designed to be attenuated version of the virus which will mimic the infection but not cause disease. Once an adverse event is seen, corrective measures will be put in place. It’s a continuous process, the new design will make such escape event less likely.
Such recombination events are common in nature. Our own DNA goes through the same. People should learn the science and stop weaponizing ignorance. Several billions of people have taken the polio vaccine without issues. When issues arise the same scientific method will be used to investigate and fixed. That fact that some people are ignorant does not mean that people around the world are looking to do them harm.
Let's read the history of Polio and the Polio vaccine properly. The doctor who developed Polio vaccine tested it on his children and when it was successful he refused to patent it and sell it for profit. People need fix their ignorance. Louis Pasteur and others developed the BCG vaccine for TB and for nearly 100 years it's the only vaccine that works against TB. Unlike polio, BCG is a Bacterium and not a virus. Viruses are prone to the genetic recombination that causes adverse events. This is why HIV vaccine does not exist.
