1. COMPARED WITH MALAYSIA, WHICH GOT INDEPENDENCE AT THE SAME TIME AS GHANA
THE COUNTRY OF GHANA HAS NOT PRODUCED ENOUGH
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO LOOK AT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TWO NATIONS. THERE IS NEED TO PRODUCE MORE PhDS IN GHANA
Dr P K Arthur, do not worry yourself about Ghana. If you dare come to Ghana now (if you're staying abroad) you would have taken one decision you would ever regret. The person who established the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Ghana - Prof Frimpong Boateng - is now a persona non grata - courtesy of the NDC government. Remember the Akan proverb - 'Apupu a oboo ne nsuo, oda akwawee so'. Loosely translated 'the river snail that wept for the rain to fall and fill the river is now relegated to the fringes of the river'. A cardiothoracic centre is science and technology at its finest. Left to some so-called 'patriotic' Ghanaians, Prof F-Boateng should be on his way back to Germany where he stayed, studied and worked.
If you think Ghanaians, especially those in position of power (and NDC government in particular), are interested in promoting Science & Technology forget about it. Even in the two premier universities - Legon and KNUST - there are some 'entrenched professors' who will never allow anyone to shine brighter than them - in any field of study let alone science and technology.
You might have obtained your PhD outside Ghana. Stay where you are and shine. Ghana is not ready for brilliant minds. We are content to shit in buckets for another human being to carry in this 21st Century. If you had stayed in Ghana, by now you would have been a frustrated young untrained teacher (with just Senior School Certificate, perhaps), teaching in the hamlet of Gbolase - built right inside a cocoa plantation somewhere in the Denkyira/Twifo forest. Do not come to Ghana to waste your time
Thanks Doc. we need objective thinkers like you. I hope every politician in this country would have the chance to read your article so that together we can take the necessary action to save mother Ghana. Thanks once again.
It's over 12 years that I read features from the Ghanaweb and it's the second time that a columnist has raised concern about this subject.Kobby, I do agree with all what you said about the real development in our world.My only advise to you as a young scientist or enginneer is to put your knowledge into practice by teeming up with the other counterparts of your. I will love to see you advertising local building materials(as you wrote in one of your articles about this subject)in our dailies and even the electronic media.Find the solutions to all the obstacles that will come your way before you make your set up.Credits are very expensive in Ghana27% interest, but you can use your vast knowledge to have credits for your initial set up.I don't know what you are doing now and where you reside, but I believe in reading your articles that you can be a Bill Gates of Ghana if you wish.There's a huge potentials over there for you and your future colleagues.Put into practise all what you are writing 'cos no government will ever invest on all these, except we the citizens.Kwame Nkrumah tried it but no other head of state has given any attention to this starter.
Tough issue.
We went to the same schools with these leaders, but we expect too much from them.
Vaulting Ghana and Africa into the realm of science and technology is the real battlefront. Kennedy is right but it will take more than a Ghanaweb article. It is a step in the right direction, and it should not be the last.
At least, it will stop our Ghanaian friends from preaching to us about how they believe that witches have a hand in human affairs.
And Ghana will make her first "Nkrumah Car!"
While I agree that our focus on science and technology should improve, I am curious about what graduates in these areas have contributed to the country.
Somebody give me a list of what the Ghanaian scientist and technician has ever invented....We must know their use before we increase the quota for their training.
